About
Lamu is the most visited area of the Archipelago of islands, which lie between Lamu in the south, and Kiunga in the north. Lamu Old Town is the oldest and best-preserved Swahili settlement in East Africa, retaining its traditional functions. Built in coral stone and mangrove timber, the town is characterised by the simplicity of structural forms enriched by such features as inner courtyards, verandas, and elaborately carved wooden doors.
Bembea is a beautiful home situated on the edge of the picturesque fishermen’s village of Shela, alongside the dunes that fringe the long stretch of Shela Beach. Located only a few steps from the famous Peponi Hotel, Bembea House offers a holiday that brings you into close touch with Africa, where you can have a unique experience of this very special island.
The house sleeps eight people in two emperor bedrooms and two twin rooms. The rooms are furnished with four-poster beds, mosquito nets, ceiling fans and dressing tables. All rooms have en-suite bathrooms, and they all have hot water showers. The hot water is heated via solar panels. On the ground floor, there is an additional third bedroom. The third floor has a spacious dining area and an adjacent living room with plenty of seating space.
The entrance hall, decorated with seashells in the beautiful niches, has three large stone benches ideal for sitting and relaxing. The staircase leads to the fully equipped and spacious kitchen with taps that provide purified water which is sanitised for drinking and cooking. The kitchen has a lovely dining area where your friends and family can sit and dine. Through the kitchen windows you can gaze at the birds in the palm trees and enjoy the view of the sand dunes.
This four story house reflects the fascinating charm of traditional Swahili architecture mixed with eclectic furnishing and a personal touch of the finest style and comfort. Our staff are very committed, trained and always there to ensure that your stay is enjoyable and relaxing.
Guests will have sole access to the entire house. You will be collected by our boat captain from the airport and the staff will meet you at the jetty in Shela, and will take your luggage to the house.
